March (For War Stories). Inkjet Prints on cut paper. 2006.
Atlanta artist Cecelia Kane has been making 6 hands a week to represent the news headlines from almost each day of the war in Iraq. In phase two of the project, she asked other artists to take a week and interpret the project in their own way.
I thought about the way we receive information (news as propoganda for instance) as a signal, as well as some ancient Islamic art where images were not allowed, but artists circumvented that rule by making images, especially of animals, out of text.
I turned news photos from the specific days I was assigned into ascii text, and then inserted the news headlines and dates into it.
