| White and In Love Body, Flour, Video Loop, and Archival Inkjet Print - With Appropriated Footage from Lena Wertmuller's The Seduction of Mimi. 2000/2005 |
|
| White and in Love attempts to show how whiteness is culturally constructed, just as other "races" are constructed. My departure point was a segment of The Seduction of Mimi by Lina Wertmuller. Her films are always political and social satires, and I thought it was interesting to se Italian constructions of race - to see that race is thought of differently in another culture proves that race is a construction, not a 'natural' thing. I digitally edited myself into the film clip, using the conventions of editing to make it seem as if something is awry. I had white flour poured over me, exaggerating my whiteness, and turning myself into a monster (how different are racial constructions from Frankenstein?). | |
